A New Chapter in Accelerating Childhood Cancer Research

Kyra’s Hope Foundation is collaborating with systems biologist Taran Gujral, PhD, Director of the Transformative Rare Cancer Initiative (TRACER) at Fred Hutch Cancer Center.

Kyra’s Hope Foundation is proud to share the beginning of a collaboration with Taran Gujral, PhD, a systems biologist and Director of the Transformative Rare Cancer Initiative (TRACER) at Fred Hutch Cancer Center. Together, we are working to accelerate childhood cancer and rare cancer research by combining cancer biology expertise with embedded technology and engineering expertise.

When we lost Kyra, we promised ourselves that no other family would walk this road without us in the fight. Kyra’s Hope Foundation was designed to be a scalable movement, one that brings the technology industry’s engineers, data scientists, and AI experts directly into research labs to work toward improving the lives of children with cancer. Taran Gujral at Fred Hutch is an important collaborator for us because he shares our ambition: advancing research infrastructure that can benefit the broader scientific community.

Why pair biologists with engineers?

Modern cancer research is as much a data challenge as a laboratory challenge. Across the field, research teams increasingly depend on software infrastructure, data pipelines, and AI tools to turn raw data into insight. Building and maintaining that infrastructure is a specialized discipline of its own, and it is rarely the reason a scientist went into science.

That gap is exactly where our research program focuses. Through the Kyra’s Hope Research Grant, selected research projects receive dedicated expertise from Kyra’s Hope Fellows: volunteer professionals in software engineering, artificial intelligence, machine learning, data engineering, cloud infrastructure, and research platform development. What the grant delivers is an embedded team. This model complements the scientific capabilities of research laboratories by providing the specialized technology expertise that supports modern cancer research.

Two kinds of expertise, one goal

Dr. Gujral’s lab brings deep expertise in cancer biology. This collaboration pairs that science with an embedded team of Kyra’s Hope Fellows, so biology and engineering move forward together rather than in sequence.

Where the work begins

The inaugural Kyra’s Hope Research Grant supports a collaborative project with the Gujral Lab at Fred Hutch. We will share the full story of that project, what we are building together and why it matters, here in the coming days.

This is the model our research program was founded to build: scientists and engineers, working side by side, to move childhood cancer and rare cancer research faster.
